Art Inside Out

Trauma-Informed Creative Programming for Healing, Engagement, and Connection
An introductory slide that provides an overview of the Art Inside Out program, which offers an evidence based creative programming for healing, engagement, and connection.

Art Inside Out is a program of Oregon Harbor of Hope. AIO offers a transformative approach to expressive arts programming, empowering individuals and communities to heal, engage, and connect through the power of accessible, trauma-informed creative practice. By blending art making with values-based dialogue, AIO creates an ‘open window’ for growth, complementing evidence-based therapeutic approaches and delivering measurable outcomes in areas such as emotional regulation, self-worth, and community cohesion. Grounded in safety, flexibility, and proven success, Art Inside Out is the trusted choice for organizations seeking to foster positive change and support their participants’ journey of healing and transformation.

Meet Kirk Charlton

Kirk Charlton is an artist and educator who developed the Art Inside Out (AIO) program. His lived experience with incarceration and recovery has shaped AIO’s emphasis on dignity, authenticity, and transformation. Charlton’s approach blends artistic instruction with practical life reflection, creating a program that resonates deeply with participants and institutions alike.

Proven Three-Part Model

Art-Making

Participants engage in achievable drawing or creative prompts using simple materials (pencil and paper). The focus is on process, not artistic skill.

Art–Life Connections

Short readings connect creative practice to everyday life skills such as patience, self-talk, problem-solving, honesty, and self-worth type of ART-life Connections.

Positive Dialogue

Facilitated, opt-in discussions promote reflection, shared learning, and respectful communication in a psychologically safe space, letting participants engage comfortably.

This intentional oscillation between art and dialogue creates an “open window” for learning, participants are calmer, more focused, and more receptive to positive ideas.
